How to Easily Create Your Own Blog

Posted in Wordpress on April 5, 2018

While setting up your own blog/website may seem like a daunting task that’s going to require an IT degree and a pile of money, it’s actually fairly simple to do. I’m going to cover the steps and, by the end of this post, you’ll be up and running, ready to share your stories with the world.

For those of you wondering why I’m not suggesting simply using the free WordPress hosting, or one of the other free blogging platforms, the answer is simple. Monetization and customization. With your own hosted blog, you are free to install any add-on features you need, run any ads or affiliate programs you want, and run your site according to your rules. On we go.

Domain Name

First, you need a domain name- the that everyone will visit. Usually, this will only cost you $15 or less a year. For me coming, up with a name for a new project is the hardest part. You need a name that fits what you do, sounds good, and is also available for purchase as a domain name. Once you have that name, though, I recommend for purchasing your domain name. is competitively priced, but they also offer free private registration. That’s super important if you do not want scammers emailing and calling you constantly. Also, they do not email you over and over like some of the larger domain name companies do.

Next, you need your web hosting. This is where your website and email accounts will actually be located. I always recommend Bluehost – they are affordable, reliable, and have great customer service.

I even have an affiliate banner, if you want to make me a few bucks when you get your hosting.

Setting up Your Blog

Another great perk of Bluehost, is you get your shiney new account with WordPress pre-installed. That means once your account is created, you simply set Bluehost to manage your DNS (don’t worry, support should be able to help you with that) and BLAM! You have a blog.

Seriously, that’s it. You have a basic blog you could start using, Now, it’s time to hook it up.

Setting Your Theme

WordPress, by default, doesn’t have the best looking blog. Luckily, that’s easy enough to fix.

  1. Head in to your WordPress admin – located at (of course, replacing “YourAwesomeWebsite” with your domain name you set up).
  2. Put your mouse over “Appearance”, and click on “Themes” to bring up the Theme management page.
  3. On the page that will load, click on “Add New” button to bring up a boat load of free WordPress themes. There are other websites with both free and paid themes but, for now, try out the free ones available through WordPress.
  4. Once you find a look you like, simply click on”Install”, then “Activate” to make your blog have that new look.

Ads $$$ Money

Most of the ad and affiliate companies are going to want to see that you actually have a site, with information users want to read. Before you start monetizing, you need to write a few posts. You do this in the WordPress admin, under Posts. Go do that now, I’ll wait.

Done? Great.

Now, it’s time to sign up for some ad and affiliate programs. Here’s a list of the most commonly used, and any others we feel are worth mentioning. I’ll update this list as time goes.

Handy Add-ons

There are a few addons that make running your blog easier. These can be installed under “Plugins”, then “Add New” in your WordPress admin.

That’s It. You’re Done

You can go wild installing free add-ons, play with more themes, or just start cranking out blog posts. The latter makes you money, so I recommend that choice. Don’t forget to share your new blog on your favorite social site.
